The experience: A rustic setting and around 130 extras
The Sant Martí Vell nativity scene is characterized by strong traditional roots and a very young spirit a time to get organized. Promoted by the entity Friends of the Living Nativity, the route it integrates perfectly into the stone architecture and alleys of this small and beautiful town.
The representation, which involves some 130 extras, allows visitors to experience the nativity scene from the inside in a very immersive way, walking through scenes that recreate with great care the trades and life in Catalonia's rural past, in addition to the traditional Nativity.
Performance dates and times (Christmas)
- A single day: Unlike living nativities held over several days, Sant Martí Vell usually concentrates all its activity into one busy day at the end of December (around December 28).
- Start time: Following the Girona tradition, the event starts when the sun goes down behind the Gavarres, opening its doors at 6:30 PM.
Tickets and benefits of the SX3 Card
The organization maintains a very affordable price policy to encourage the visit of families from all over the region:
- Symbolic contribution: A very affordable donation is established as general admission, which usually from 4€ per person
- Families and children: This nativity scene is part of the promotions of the Carnet Super3 (SX3), a perfect detail if you plan to go with the rogue.
Association life: Calçotada and Popular Lunch
Sant Martí Vell's nativity scene is alive all year round. The organizing body works tirelessly to raise funds and build souperhood through several very popular food events open to all:
- La Calçotada (March): With the arrival of spring, they organize a big calçotada popular in the courtyard of the Social Center with full menu, barbecue and special prices for children.
- The Popular Lunch (October): As the start of the new Nativity season, at autumn, a massive lunch is held in the town square (usually based on sea and mountain rice). It is free for the extras of the previous edition and open to the general public with prior reservation.
Logistics: Where to park and where to eat
The visit would not be complete without the classic taste of hot soup offered to enter in heat on winter evenings.
The center of Sant Martí Vell has access restrictions during the night of the nativity scene. The organization enables parking areas around the church and access to the municipality.
As for gastronomy, within the urban area of Sant Martí Vell you will find the classics Sant Martí Restaurant. An ideal country kitchen establishment if you want extreme comfort. Of course, since the town is packed to the brim on the night of the Nativity (and it is practically the only option of nearby dining in the center), it is absolutely necessary to call several days in advance to book a table if you intend to dine there.
